Minoxidil: hoe werkt het nu echt?

Minoxidil: How Does It Really Work?

Hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)

Hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) affects both men and women and can start at a young age. The market offers countless shampoos, supplements, and serums that claim to stop hair loss or stimulate hair growth — unfortunately, there is little to no scientific evidence to support these claims. Dermatologists do not recommend cosmetic products for the treatment of hair loss*.

At present, minoxidil is the only over-the-counter product in the Netherlands with scientifically proven effectiveness against hereditary hair loss. It is registered as a non-prescription medicinal product and is recommended worldwide by dermatologists**.

A non-prescription medicinal product means it is available under the supervision of a pharmacy or drugstore. You do not need a doctor’s prescription to obtain it.

How minoxidil works

Minoxidil works by:

  • Improving blood flow to the hair follicles
  • Prolonging the hair growth (anagen) phase
  • Slowing down the reduction in hair thickness associated with hereditary hair loss
  • In some cases, stimulating new hair growth

Please note: minoxidil is not a miracle cure, but it can make a meaningful difference. It is important to start treatment early and to use it consistently and long term (at least 3 to 6 months before initial results become visible).

Foam or solution?

Minoxidil is available in different formulations and strengths. Which option is best for you depends on your personal preference, skin sensitivity, and, of course, the advice of your dermatologist.

Minoxidil solution 2%

  • Solution containing propylene glycol***
  • Can be applied as a spray or with a precision applicator
  • Most commonly used by women

Minoxidil solution 5%

  • Solution containing propylene glycol***
  • Higher chance of effectiveness compared to 2% minoxidil
  • Can be applied as a spray or with a precision applicator

Minoxidil 5% foam

  • Contains no propylene glycol*
  • Dries faster and feels less sticky
  • Lower risk of itching or irritation
  • Popular among users with a sensitive or dry scalp
  • Equally effective as minoxidil 5% solution

Having trouble choosing? We also offer a convenient starter combo that includes both minoxidil 5% solution and foam.

* There are no dermatological treatment guidelines that include cosmetic products for the treatment of hereditary hair loss.

** For example: European Dermatology Forum – S3 guideline for Androgenetic Alopecia (AAG).

*** Propylene glycol may cause scalp irritation in sensitive individuals. If this applies to you, consider using minoxidil 5% foam instead of the solution.
